Yep, it's definitely a pain in the ass. The way I see it as long as the type of article you want to write is in at least one spot on page one then you're good to go.
You can look up the data in Ahrefs or similar keyword research tools that show SERP results. But for figuring out searcher intent it isn't necessary, typing into Google works just as well. Obviously you'll need a tool to come up with the keyword ideas to begin with, though.
