I’ve heard the saying “talented people naturally rise to the top” i/r/t online content more times than I can count.
I get where people are coming from when they say this.
From a consumer’s POV, it seems like people randomly come out of nowhere. Every single day you log on to YouTube and see videos from people you’ve never heard of that have 100k+ views.
But as the saying goes, overnight successes are years in the making. When you’re the one actually creating content, you don’t naturally rise to the top (regardless of how talented you may be).
Tons of people with extreme talent get lost in the slop and the BS online.
There’s just too many people out there creating content.

You don’t naturally rise to the top. You have to push yourself there.
Most people - especially those with artistic inclinations - DESPISE marketing. They find it degrading and think that they should be able to work on their craft and quote-unquote Put It Out There and people will - somehow - magically find it and give them money and attention.
IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.
Not for anyone.
Even some of the most famous celebrities you know had to grind it out in their early days.
Justin Bieber got his start by begging for subscribers on YouTube:
