“Know your worth.”

It’s usually a phrase used when you’re trying to pump yourself or someone else up.

“Go in there and tell them what you want and refuse to accept anything less.”

But if you think about it, the saying is neutral.

You should know when your value is high, but also be willing to accept when it’s low.

The hell of high self-esteem

That’s why most people have such a hard time starting a business once they’re established in their careers.

If you’re 35yo and making a couple hundred thousand/year+++ in your corporate job, your self-assessment of your value to the world is through the roof.

You think you’re the man. Your boss thinks you’re the man. Everyone is impressed by you and what you do.

Then you start a random e-com business with a white labeled product and expect immediate, overwhelming results…only to get bitchslapped by reality.

Maybe you don’t make any money for a month. Maybe you don’t make any for several months.

Then you finally make a profit…only for it to be $1k/month.

Meanwhile at your day job you’re making $20k+.

Realistically, this is the moment where you (if you’re like 99% of adult male humans) will quit.

The hit to the ego is too much to bear.

ESPECIALLY if you made the mistake of telling people about your new business.

The boys at work are clowning on you. Your wife is embarrassed and wishes you would “get serious” and return your attention to getting onto the next rung of the corporate ladder. You look at yourself in the mirror and think “wtf am I doing?”

Here’s the part where you’re going to hate me: The couple grand you make per month from your wifi business is the accurate representation of your value.

The cash and bennies you get from your corpo gig were handed to you. It feels like you earned them because of all the time you put in, but you didn’t.

Entrepreneurs are the only people who genuinely earn their place in the world.

That’s why people who start their first business young (even if it fails, which the first one almost always does), are more likely to succeed.

They already know they’re at the bottom of the totem pole, so the bitchslap from the universe doesn’t sting as bad. They’re able to keep their head down and keep trying, over and over and over and over again until something hits.

Don’t let your overly-high opinion of yourself stop you from reaching your potential.

That’s one type of person who needs to honestly accept their worth.

The other type is the opposite.

Self-sabotage

Some people are so afraid of their own shadow that they never bother to put themselves out there to begin with.

They hate themselves so much and are so wrapped up in their self-identity as a loser that they genuinely believe they DESERVE to stay in whatever mediocre circumstances they’re currently mired in
