We’re in the middle of an epidemic of “big picture thinking” that’s destroying our society and individual people’s lives.
The worst part about it is that most people don’t view it as a problem. Don’t “smart people” talk about politics all the time? Isn’t paying attention to current events part of being a “responsible citizen”?
NO.
Focusing on the big picture is what people do when they have nothing else going on in their life. When you feel like your life is spinning out of control, it’s easier to fantasize that it’s because you’re part of a “bigger mission” that the normies just don’t understand. Don’t they know that you can’t be bothered paying attention to petty things like building a business? You’re trying to save the world over here!
“Since I couldn’t control the environment in my own corner of the world, it seemed sensible to think about the universe instead. It was mental masturbation”.
- Douglas Ramsey, American POW in Vietnam
Except, deep down in your heart, you know that it isn’t true.
You’re not part of some grand team that’s fighting a cosmic battle for the future of human civilization.
