I haven’t met many people who started a website who hadn’t been thinking about it for a long time beforehand.

They fantasize about how it’s going to go. They can see the success in their mind. They can literally feel the satisfaction of walking into their job and quitting on the spot, while their stunned coworkers turn around in their cubicles and stare with shocked looks on their faces. Who is this guy?

So they’re all full of piss and vinegar by the time they actually get around to launching a site (usually years after they first started thinking about it).

Yeah, I’m just going to buy a domain and hosting, do a bit of this and that, and BAM I’ll be an overnight success. After all, my mom told me I would be a somebody one day and my momma ain’t no liar.

Then the months go by. It feels like they’re screaming at the top of their lungs but no one’s listening. The internet might as well be a hell that devours dreams instead of souls.

Instant success is a myth

Damn, I’m not going to be an overnight success?

No, you’re not.
