Keyword research is something that lots of beginner SEOs have difficulty with. There are a few different strategies I use, but my favorite technique is to steal ideas from my competition (very low-effort).

This guide will assume that you’re using AHREFS (one of my recommended tools), but there are ways to do this with similar tools like SEMRush.

How to steal content ideas from your competition

Your first step is to log in to AHREFS and type the URL for your homepage into the search bar at the top of the page. For the purposes of this article, we’re looking at a site called outdoorgearlab.com (completely random site).

You’ll end up on a page that gives you a ton of different information about the domain: DR score, backlinks, organic keywords, traffic, and tons of other data about the site.

For the purposes of this article, you’re going to ignore everything other than your DR score. Take note of your score (for this site it’s 72). Then go to the left-hand side of the screen and click on “Competing Domains” underneath “Organic Search”.

This page will show you a list of domains that are in the same niche, ordered based on percentage of keywords they have in common with your site. Since the site we’re looking at is in the camping niche, all of the competing domains are as well.

These are the sites that you are going to steal keyword ideas from.

Here’s how.
