Trying to Be Likable Just Makes Them Hate You More
Entourage isn't real life
If you’ve come up from nothing your first instinct is to try to be one of the “cool, humble, relatable rich dudes”.
You want to show everyone that you haven’t changed, that you’re still one of the boys and can go out to dive bars and drink lagers just like all the other schmucks from your hometown.
This is a massive mistake.
Everyone thinks they can pull it off.
That’s why the show Entourage was one of the biggest hits in TV history.
It’s the ultimate fantasy.
Hang out with the boys just like you’ve always done, but now with money.
The problem?
It just doesn’t work that way. It’s another one of those Iron Laws of the Universe.
Money changes everything.
Every society has royalty
People have no problem with you being more successful than them provided they view you as inherently superior.
It makes people uncomfortable to talk about the world in these terms. But it’s undeniably true.
Why do you think every society that has ever existed has some type of royalty?
It’s human nature to want to look up to some and look down on others. No matter how much people kick and scream about how they want everyone to be equal…they don’t.
Even America, the land of “all men are created equal”, might not have a formal aristocracy but it does have its substitutes.
That’s why rich professional athletes, actors, and rappers can get away with flexing. People view them as god-like figures who have otherworldly talent that mere mortals don’t possess. Everyone knows they can’t act as well as Johnny Depp or play ball as well as LeBron James. Of course these gods among men are going to have more money than everyone else.
How people react to successful peers
Compare this to how they react when they see someone who they can relate to, someone who seems like a “regular guy” who is much more successful than them.
It fills them with an insane jealous rage that words can’t describe.
