There’s a serious problem with the way politically-obsessed people think.
Most of you think that you’re being a “responsible educated citizen” when you spend countless hours ranting about politics on social media/IRL.
The reality is the complete opposite (as usual).
Truly responsible people focus on things that are within their sphere of influence. There isn’t a single thing you can do to change the outcome of world events. But it turns out that there is something you can do to alter the trajectory of your life and your family’s future, it’s just not what you think it is.
Why you’re obsessed with politics
You’re obsessed with politics because there’s something in your personal life that isn’t going the way you want it to. You’re distracting yourself by joining a “big movement” to give yourself a sense of purpose.
There’s something weird that happens to people when they feel like things are out of control in their lives. Instead of really dialing in and doing the necessary work to dig themselves out of whatever hole they’re in, they instead waste their time with distractions.
For a lot of people this takes the form of mindless entertainment: TV, movies, celebrity gossip, or sports.
For a lot of you, it’s politics.
Feeling like you’re part of “the culture war” or that you’re saving Western civilization is your way of distracting you from the reality of your life: you’re not where you want to be and it feels like nothing you do will ever change that.
So you turn on the podcasts and read the ragebait articles. The emotional high you get from them temporarily distracts you from the meaninglessness of your life.
