News you should be paying attention to
The Google Exec Reinventing Search in the AI Era - from Wall Street Journal. Technically this one is from October but it’s new to me. One interesting thing Liz Reid says in the interview is that part of the reason sites are losing traffic is because of a change in user behavior (favoring UGC, videos, etc). I agree with that. But in my opinion that doesn’t excuse Google deliberately pushing independent sites out with the HCU. Interesting read regardless.
Shoppers made an estimated $11.8 billion in online purchases on Black Friday - from New York Times. This is a 9.1% increase from last year. The death of Black Friday has been greatly exaggerated.
Adobe to Acquire SEMRush - from Adobe. The total cost? $1.9B. Kind of a weird acquisition. I wonder what changes Adobe will make and what they’re really hoping to gain. The press release just mentions vague marketing-speak like “brand visibility is top of mind…” et. al.
Cloudflare apologises for outage which took down X and ChatGPT - from BBC. Having one single point of failure for half the interwebs probably isn’t the best idea. This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. There are too many complex systems in society that can be completely taken down by one small problem. It’ll freak you out if you think about it too much.
Organic search is still a top B2B discovery and pipeline driver - from Ahrefs. SEO changes, but it never dies.
Quote of the month
“Everyone enjoys the privileges that accord with his state of existence. Let us not underestimate the privileges of the mediocre. Life is always harder as one mounts the heights - the cold increases, responsibility increases. A high civilization is a pyramid: it can stand only on a broad base; its primary prerequisite is a strong and soundly consolidated mediocrity.”
- Friedrich Nietzsche, The Antichrist
Everyone thinks about you gain when you start a business…but no one ever talks about what you give up.
Are you sure this is the life for you?

The sole reason you build a business is to give yourself freedom.
But if you’re tied to one location, you can never be free.
In this classic article I explain why you need the optionality an asset-light business gives you.
You Need an Asset-Light Business
